Best Time to Visit Spiti Valley

Spiti Valley changes completely with the seasons. In summer it is a road-tripper's paradise of high passes and turquoise lakes; in winter it is a silent white desert of frozen rivers and snow-bound monasteries. The best time to visit Spiti Valley depends entirely on what you want from the trip.

This guide covers the whole year — the summer window, the winter window and the shoulder months — so you can choose the right time for snow, roads, photography or simply fewer crowds. Weather and road conditions change every year, so always verify current conditions before you travel.

Spiti Valley Seasons at a Glance

  • Summer (May–September): The main season. Both the Manali–Kunzum and Shimla–Kinnaur routes are open, Chandratal Lake is accessible, and bike trips and road trips run at full swing.
  • Shoulder (October–November): Crowds thin, days are crisp and clear, and the first snow dusts the higher villages. The Manali route begins to close.
  • Winter (December–February): Deep winter. The Manali–Kunzum pass closes and Spiti is reached only via the Shimla–Kinnaur route. Snow, sub-zero cold and very few tourists.
  • Spring (March–April): The valley thaws, roads slowly reopen and it is quiet, with some snow lingering at higher villages.

Best Time for a Summer Spiti Road Trip: May to September

May to September is the classic Spiti season. The Manali–Rohtang–Kunzum route opens (usually from late May or June), making the full Spiti circuit and Chandratal Lake accessible. This is when Spiti bike trips and the popular 7–10 day road trips run. Daytime temperatures are pleasant (15–25°C), though nights are still cold.

If you want the full circuit, green valleys, Chandratal and the high passes, plan for June to September. July–August can see rain on the lower Kinnaur stretch, so June and September are often the sweet spots. See our Spiti Valley summer packages for the road trips that run in this window.

Best Time for Snow and Winter Spiti: December to February

December to February is the true winter window. The Manali route closes under snow, and Spiti is reached via the all-weather Shimla–Kinnaur–Spiti road through Kalpa, Chitkul and Tabo. You get snow-covered monasteries, frozen waterfalls, sub-zero nights and almost no other tourists.

January is the coldest and most photogenic month, with nights dropping to −20°C in Kaza. December brings the first heavy snowfall and Christmas batches; February is slightly milder with lengthening days. Read our full Winter Spiti Valley page and the Spiti Valley snowfall guide for the winter detail.

Best Time to Avoid Crowds: October, November and March

October and November are quiet shoulder months — crisp, clear days, thin crowds and the first dusting of snow at higher villages. The Manali route starts to close in November, so the Shimla–Kinnaur route becomes the safer option. March is when the valley thaws and the Manali route slowly reopens — quiet, with some lingering snow.

These months suit travellers who want peace and don't need the full summer circuit or deep-winter snow. Always check road status, since shoulder months can be unpredictable.

Weather by Month

  • May–June: 10–20°C days, cold nights. Routes opening up.
  • July–August: 15–25°C days, occasional rain on lower stretches. Full season.
  • September: 10–20°C days, clear skies. Excellent for photography.
  • October–November: 5–15°C days, cold nights, first snow at altitude.
  • December–February: −5 to 5°C days in Kaza, nights to −20°C. Deep winter.
  • March–April: 5–12°C days, roads reopening, lingering snow.

So, When Should You Go?

Go in June or September for the full summer road trip with Chandratal and the high passes. Go in December–February for snow, silence and winter photography. Go in October, November or March for fewer people and a quieter, in-between experience. There is no single "best" time — only the best time for what you want.
